How to use the stock screener

A stock screener narrows thousands of companies down to the few that match your criteria. Start from a proven investing playbook or combine filters on growth, margins, returns on capital, debt and valuation.

  1. 1Pick a playbook such as Buffett-style quality, the SaaS Rule of 40 or cash cows.
  2. 2Sort the results by any column to surface the strongest names.
  3. 3Open a company to see its full financials, business breakdown and valuation.
  4. 4With Premium, add custom filters and save your screens to revisit later.

What is a stock screener?

A stock screener filters companies by financial criteria — for example revenue growth above 10% and return on invested capital above 15% — so you can find candidates for deeper research quickly.

What is the Rule of 40?

The Rule of 40 says a healthy software company's revenue growth rate plus its profit margin (often free-cash-flow margin) should be at least 40%. It balances growth against profitability.

What is ROIC and why does it matter?

Return on invested capital measures how much after-tax operating profit a company earns for each dollar of capital invested. Businesses that earn well above their cost of capital for years often have a durable competitive advantage.

How often is the screener data updated?

Fundamentals come from each company's latest annual SEC filing and prices update regularly. Screens use the most recent fiscal year available.
